What is Nervous System Regulation?

At its core, nervous system regulation is the process of managing your body’s stress response, helping you stay calm and centered in the face of life’s challenges. Think of it as your body’s internal balancing act, constantly adjusting to keep you functioning at your best. To dive a little deeper, it’s helpful to understand two key parts of our autonomic nervous system: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The Sympathetic Nervous System: Often called our “fight or flight” system, this is activated when we perceive threats or stress. It increases heart rate, releases stress hormones, and prepares the body for action. The Parasympathetic Nervous System: Known as our “rest and digest” system, this promotes relaxation, slows heart rate, and supports functions like digestion and sleep. Nervous system regulation is about maintaining a balance between these two systems. In our modern world, many of us find ourselves stuck in sympathetic activation, leading to chronic stress and its associated health problems. Many of us walk around with dysregulated nervous systems without even realizing it. Some common signs include: • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep • Chronic anxiety or excessive worrying • Difficulty concentrating or brain fog • Mood swings or irritability • Chronic fatigue or low energy • Overreacting to minor stressors • Feelings of numbness or emotional disconnection • Dissociative experiences (feeling detached from oneself or surroundings) • Unexplained aches and pains that move around the body • Digestive issues with no clear medical cause (e.g., IBS symptoms, nausea) If these symptoms sound familiar, don’t worry. Simple Techniques for Nervous System Regulation

Here are two powerful techniques you can start practicing today: 1. Grounding in the body: – Become aware of physical sensations in your body – Focus on areas of contact with surfaces (like feet on the floor or back against a chair) – Notice the feeling of gravity in your body, how it supports and anchors you – Pay attention to areas in your body that feel pleasant or neutral 2. Orienting to your environment: – Slowly and mindfully look around your environment – Notice what you see, hear, and smell – Doing a slow 360 degree visual check to show your body that there is no threat around you These simple practices can have a profound impact on your nervous system, helping to bring you back to a state of balance.

So, how does all of this connect to resilience? Nervous system regulation is like strength training for your emotional and psychological well-being. When we learn to regulate our nervous system, we’re essentially training our body and mind to respond to stress and challenges more effectively. This leads to increased resilience in several ways: 1. Better stress management 2. Improved emotional balance 3. Greater adaptability to change 4. Quicker recovery from difficult experiences 5. Enhanced self-awareness 6. Stronger relationships 7.
